A Report on The Asian Tsunami Disaster Humanitarian Relief
by Khind Tsunami Disaster Relief Committee

Two months have passed from the fateful day on December 26, 2004, when the deadly Tsunami waves struck the countries bordering the Indian Ocean and took away close to 282,000 lives and left many homeless.

At that point of time, the whole world grieved for the victims. The management and staff of Khind Group of Companies also unveiled a sense of compassion by donating cash and old clothes to the tsunami victims. A tsunami disaster relief committee was immediately set up to expedite the collection of cash from all staff (including branches and East Malaysia) and old clothes. With such overwhelming response, our Customers Care Centre was turned into a tsunami relief collection centre overnight.

The total cash collected as at 10 January 2005 was RM12,372.00. Partial amount was wisely used to purchase 220 cartons of Julie’s Golden Crackers (RM5,016.00) and 550 cartons of Cactus’s drinking water (RM3,850.00). Khind Mistral Industries Sdn Bhd also donated 500 units of Khind portable torch lights. All these items together with the old clothings were shipped to the affected areas as arranged by Siri Jayanti Buddhist Temple on 5 January 2005. On 31 January 2005, RM1,000.00 cash was forwarded to TEC Asia Tsunami Fund for the purchase of medical supplies and the remaining RM2,506.00 cash was handed to Siri Jayanti - Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple for the setting up of an orphanage in Sri Lanka on 5 February 2005.

We engaged in another heart-warming exercise in end January whereby the management and staff have mutually agreed to forego the annual dinner celebration. The total bulk of the money including annual dinner sponsorship from suppliers and business associates was channelled to the Taiwan-based Buddhist Compassionate Relief Tzu Chi Foundation. Tzu Chi will build a new town with housing units for 1,000 affected families in Sri Lanka’s Kajuwatta area and also 300 tent houses and a community with 1,000 permanent houses for the victims in Sri Lanka’s southeastern coast, one of the hardest tsunami-hit areas. On 1 February 2005, our Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Cheng Ping Keat presented the cheque of RM60,000.00 to Tzu Chi Foundation, Malaysia Representative Office located in Kelana Jaya.

A special report by the Buddhist Channel on 4 February 2005 mentioned that Tzu Chi Foundation has completed 196 tent houses for tsunami survivors in Hambantota, a resort city in southeastern Sri Lanka and in addition to providing medical care and tent houses, Tzu Chi distributed relief essentials to 3,330 households in Ambalantota and Hambantota on January 29-30, benefiting 12,488 people.
